Week 50 - Curse of the Poster

"Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown."
- William Shakespeare, Henry IV

The last Friday the Thirteenth of 2013 will be a notorious day in MMA history. George St. Pierre announced his indefinite hiatus from the sport due to personal issues and gives up his title. With the welterweight belt up for grabs, Johny Hendricks (the man who many say arguably beat Rush for the title) will face Robbie Lawler - a fighter experiencing a renaissance in his career - on April next year for the vacant belt. If there's anything to be said about his departure from his sport, it's the fact that he stepped away at what could be considered his prime. George is a very smart man for that, and his actions reflect the true essence of being a champion - that he does not wish to compete without being at his best. Joe Rogan said that there is no such thing as a fighter retiring too soon, but there is such a thing as a fighter retiring too late. I, for one, agree with this - and we could see that this is the case with a lot of the last generation's athletes (like Chuck Liddell, who was forced into retirement by the UFC brass). GSP stayed classy until the end. It's rare for someone to be relieved of their burdens on their own terms, and that is what he did. Heaven knows he deserves a good, long time off.

Meanwhile in real life, we attended the company's annual year-end ball last week, as well as catch the showings of Catching Fire and Ender's Game. I also (almost) finished The Walking Dead and I must say it's one of the better games out there.

I can't wait what the last couple of weeks would hold for us.

Later!
